Faculty Position in Large Animal Surgery

The Department of Clinical Sciences in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for two assistant clinical professors in large animal surgery.  The successful applicants are expected to provide advanced surgical and emergency care in the Hospital for Large Animals (HLA), to contribute to pre-clinical, clinical skills, and rotation teaching in the DVM program, and to mentor residents and interns.

The HLA (https://vetmed.tufts.edu/hospital-large-animals) is a full-service hospital with an annual caseload of approximately 2000 cases. The primary caseload (85%) is competition and pleasure horses, with the remaining primarily comprised of small ruminants, camelids, and companion swine. Technicians provide 24-hour medical care for hospitalized animals. There are two interns and five residents (2 in surgery).  A field service unit provides ambulatory and food animal service in Woodstock, CT.

The HLA specialty services include general surgery, ultrasound, internal medicine, and equine sports medicine. The surgery service has access to intra-operative fluoroscopic, arthroscopic, and laparoscopic instrumentation. The HLA is supported by outstanding radiology, ultrasound, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and anesthesiology services. Sophisticated diagnostic facilities include endoscopy (including overground dynamic endoscopy), arthroscopy, gastroscopy, ultrasonography, computed tomography, 3T MRI, nuclear imaging, a pulmonary function laboratory, a comprehensive veterinary diagnostic laboratory, a state-?of-?the-? art isolation unit, and an indoor sport-medicine arena.

We seek enthusiastic, team-oriented clinicians who will provide outstanding patient care, client care, and service for our referring veterinarians. To meet the needs of the HLA, it is expected the position will involve approximately 18-20 weeks of after-hours emergency coverage and 14-16 weeks of daytime clinical service.  Emergency night and weekend work is managed in conjunction with interns and residents. In addition, there would be approximately 4 weeks for teaching, 5 weeks for research and scholarly activity, and 4 weeks for administrative service. Vacation and university time off is 5 weeks. While clinical track appointments are weighted to clinical and educational activity, faculty members are still expected to engage in sufficient research and scholarly activity to remain at the forefront of their discipline.

Qualifications: Must hold a DVM or equivalent degree.  Completion of a residency program in large animal surgery meeting the requirements of the American College of Veterinary Surgery (ACVS) is mandatory. Board certification is required at, or no later than two-years following, the date of hire. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching at all levels is expected. Experience and interest in research relevant to the strengths of the department or the school are considered assets.

Application procedure: Review of applications will begin April 4th and the search will be continued until suitable candidates are identified. Start date is negotiable, but the preferred start date is July 2, 2022. Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter describing their qualifications, clinical experience and interests, research and scholarly interests, and teaching experience.  Please address your strengths and experiences in diversity and inclusion as it relates to teaching, research, and/or service in your cover letter. The names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references should be provided. Applicants should submit materials through the Interfolio link (https://apply.interfolio.com/103561). For questions about the application process, please contact Dr. Leslie Sharkey at Leslie.Sharkey@tufts.edu.
