DuPage County Animal Services is a self-supported County Department that functions as an animal shelter and an animal control facility. In both capacities, staff provides residents solutions to common animal concerns, resources to help keep pets in homes, reduce the unwanted pet population, and exist safely with wild and domestic animals. The department oversees a volunteer and foster program that helps staff meet the daily needs of the animals in the custody of the County and partners with DuPage Animal Friends, a nonprofit that fundraises for the department. As an open admission animal shelter, the department accepts all domestic animals regardless of species, breed, age, medical condition, or behavior. Animals arrive at the shelter as strays with the goal of reunification, as a result of impound due to an investigation or other emergency, or surrendered by an owner who can no longer care for them. During an animal’s temporary stay, the animal care staff is led by an Administrator, Deputy Administrator Veterinarian, and other support teams that ensures high standards of care, medical treatment, and daily enrichment. Animal Services also operates a specialty veterinary vehicle to... perform spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, other medical procedures, outreach services, and humane education in the community. The department provides for the enforcement and administration of County ordinances and State laws related to animals. Animal Control Officers provide field services to rescue stray, sick, or injured animals, and investigate other animal concerns in unincorporated areas of the County and provide assistance to municipal partners upon request.
