Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center (AVES) is seeking two full time hospitalists to join our multi-disciplinary hospital. We are seeking a veterinarian with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience to work alongside our emergency veterinarians and our specialist to help provide care to patients admitted to our ICU. The eligible applicant should have a solid foundation of veterinary medical knowledge, excellent multi-tasking abilities and effective communication skills. The applicant should lead by example and always maintain a professional demeanor while adhering to our core values including kindness, collaboration, integrity, and consistency. We desire an individual that strives to enhance their medical knowledge and skill set while working alongside our highly skilled doctors and technical staff. Teamwork and culture is of utmost importance at AVES as we consider all of our team members as family. Our specialty services include Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Oncology and Cardiology (provided by CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets).

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Overseeing patients admitted to the ICU that are not being managed by our specialists or senior emergency veterinarians.
  • Perform necessary medical procedures on hospitalized patients
  • Offering the highest standard of medicine to all clients while having the adaptability to work within clients’ financial means.
  • Providing consistent, clear, and comprehensive communication to clients and the referring community.
  • Facilitating in-house transfers from the emergency department to specialty departments when needed through collaborative patient rounds.
  • Contributing to relaying diagnostic results to owners and in-house DVM’s for currently hospitalized patients or those previously evaluated via the emergency service.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and leadership to enhance departmental workflow and standard operating procedures.
  • Contribute to staff and doctor training in conjunction with our education department
  • Attend departmental and staff meetings on a routine basis
  • Occasional receiving of patients via the emergency service after mutual agreement between the applicant and medical director.

The qualified candidate will have the opportunity to grow professionally with the hospital and sustain strong relationships with referring colleagues, clients, and support staff. This is a unique opportunity to work in a team of top-notch emergency doctors and specialists in a rapidly growing emergency and specialty practice. Our specialty services currently include Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Oncology, and Cardiology (provided by CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets).

AVES was established in 2014 and has had exponential growth since its establishment. AVES is locally managed by one of the original founders, Lindsay Vaughn, DVM, DACVECC and joined the NVA- Compassion-First Network in 2021 to accelerate their growth and network with other best-in-class specialty and emergency hospitals. In early 2024, AVES will be moving to a new state-of-the-art facility that is approximately 45,000 square feet and numerous additional services will be added to our hospital. We are very excited to continue to grow our hospital with you!

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive salary, health insurance, paid time off, paid holidays, 401k, uniform allowance, personal pet benefits and CE allowances. Come and join our team!

All interested candidates please apply online or submit your CV to christopher.lykins@nvacompassionfirst.com

About Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty
Compassion-First and NVA recognize that we share deep-rooted values and priorities. For years, our dedication to Specialty and Emergency medicine has been a common background. Our groups have long shared the belief that the best patient care comes from championing hospitals in their local communities and supporting the practices and culture that have made them successful. We believe in empowering veterinarians and their teams with deeper resources so they can do more of what’s already working. Combining our strengths gives us the opportunity to make a lasting and positive impact on the profession, our people, and the care of animals. As one of the only dedicated Specialty and Emergency groups in the industry, NVA Compassion-First is the trusted partner of hospital teams who are looking for more—more resources to advance their medicine, a greater sense of belonging, and increased opportunities to care for their patients, clients and people.
