Exciting opportunity in beautiful Central Oregon! We have awesome goals and want you on our team to help fulfill them. The Humane Society of Central Oregon www.hsco.org is looking for a part-time veterinarian that wants to positively impact underserved communities and provide quality medicine to our shelter animals. There is an opportunity for full-time work as we grow our local veterinary care outreach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                       Shelter/Outreach Veterinarian

REPORTS TO:           Chief Veterinary Officer

FLSA STATUS:         Part-Time Hourly

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: 

To provide the necessary medical care and expertise to maintain health and increase the adoptability of animals coming into the shelter. Additionally, to provide preventive care and surgical sterilization outreach veterinary care to identified areas of need in our community through our mobile veterinary clinic. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing physical examinations and/or consultation on all animals under the care of HSCO, as strays, animal control holds or animals owned by the shelter, that exhibit clinical signs of disease and/or injury
  • Performing physical examinations on all animals prior to surgery
  • Performing spay/neuter surgery
  • Performing additional surgeries or procedures/treatments on shelter animals that will promote their adoption and/or alleviate illness, injury or discomfort; i.e., drain placement, dental care, ocular surgeries, etc.
  • Providing preventive care and spay/neuter surgery via our mobile veterinary clinic to patients in underserved areas
  • Sharing Mission and Values of HSCO with the public
  • Seeking to improve shelter medicine and access to care

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Keeps thorough medical records for all surgeries and exams performed
  • Maintains a good working relationship with all shelter staff and keeps all related health information freely and promptly available to them
  • Works closely with other managers and staff with regard to animal health and welfare programs, observes and makes suggestions on improving the quality of care for animals at HSCO, including daily rounds with the shelter manager
  • Assists with pathway planning for animals, including population management and decision-making
  • Monitors surgical and shelter medical protocols as required
  • Stays current in both medicine and surgical skills, especially those related to the care of animals in a shelter setting.
  • Disseminates medical finding to staff in lay terms when needed
  • Performs basic veterinary care for staff animals
  • Maintains all surgical and medical equipment in top working order and facilitates a highly efficient clinic
  • Performs euthanasia on animals occasionally
  • Performs exams and surgery related to the mobile veterinary clinic for basic preventive care and for spay/neuter
  • Available for on-call assistance with shelter animal needs after hours/weekends

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school or equivalent degree with successful completion of the NAVLE and Clinical Proficiency Exam.
  • Current valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Oregon
  • Ability to pass background screening with no adverse veterinary disciplinary or criminal action on record

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Spay/neuter experience, including pediatrics
  • Preferred experience in a shelter and/or high quality/high volume spay/neuter setting
  • Ability to work with all staff members, regardless of position
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional and tactful interactions with the public and shelter staff
  • Ability to keep accurate and thorough medical records; PetPoint is utilized for medical documentation and experience with this software is preferred
  • Ability to teach various protocols to our staff
  • Follow all safety requirements related to current operational procedures related to COVID-19

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work may be performed in a noisy indoor environment.  Work may be performed outside, on-site at one of our mobile clinic locations. Travel to/from mobile locations will be necessary. There is the risk of being bitten, scratched, kicked, exposed to zoonotic diseases or otherwise harmed. This position requires lifting, bending, stretching, standing for long periods of time, computer work, writing, and filing. You must have the physical and mental ability to safely perform the full range of duties of the position without creating a hazard to self or others.
