Job Title: SHELTER VETERINARIAN

Reports to: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Scope of Position: To perform veterinary services for shelter animals. Maximize the use of clinic resources to ensure animal resident health at a minimum cost. To provide medical care as well as humane care and treatment to all animals in accordance with the policies and procedures established by Pet Animal Welfare Society of CT and the State laws of Connecticut. This is a part time, hourly position, typically 2 days per week to start, depending on the applicant’s schedule.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Work collaboratively with the ED, Medical Coordinator, Vet Tech, managers.
2. Diagnose and treat medical conditions for all PAWS shelter animals (around 700 cats and 250 dogs per year). Follow progress of all patients placed on treatment, keeping records of all treatments and final outcomes in coordination with the ED, Vet Tech and Managers.
3. Direct, conduct and evaluate treatment plans, disease control measures, and hands-on medical treatment and progress of animals housed at the shelter including but not limited to: vaccination protocols, parasite control measures, treatment protocols for routine infectious diseases, preventative medicine procedures, emergency evaluation, treatment and procedures, and pre-adoption exams.
4. Develop, conduct and monitor medical program protocols and procedures.
5. Conduct an in-house sterilization program for shelter-owned animals. Supervise all aspects of the procedures including anesthesia and post-operative care of the patient with the medical team.
6. Conduct in-house dental surgeries for shelter-owned animals. Supervise all aspects of the procedures including anesthesia and post-operative care of the patient.
7. Work with PAWS’ Medical Coordinator to oversee the scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at PAWS.
Benefits

Qualifications

1. Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine or equivalent.
2. Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Connecticut.
3. Enthusiasm for Shelter Veterinary Medicine is strongly desired.
4. Ability to conduct high quality surgical sterilizations in a fast paced environment, including pediatrics.
5. Must have a valid driver’s license.
6. Must possess a DEA license that PAWS can use to purchase medications and supplies.
7. Acquire and possess a thorough understanding of and dedication to the philosophies of animal welfare.
8. Previous experience working in a clinic or shelter environment preferred.
9. Experience in feline dental procedures preferred.
