Veterinarian

Required Education:

Purpose of the Role

White Buffalo Inc. is seeking a Wildlife Veterinarian to serve on field-based projects for ungulate population management and research. This position will play a key role in pursuing White Buffalo’s mission by providing support in both the planning and field implementation of population control and eradication projects. White Buffalo focuses on both lethal and non-lethal control of native and non-native ungulates, with additional opportunities for research on a variety of species.

Necessary Attributes for Position

This position may require extended travel to remote field locations and a willingness to live and work in sometimes rustic conditions with few amenities. The position requires a strong commitment to White Buffalo’s mission, impeccable integrity, and a keen sense of humor. The ability to be a positive member of a highly motivated team in the face of demanding field conditions and long hours is critical. This position is field-based in various locations for 4–8 months out of the year. The candidate will work limited hours while off projects.

Responsibilities

The Wildlife Veterinarian will work with a team of biologists, veterinarians, and technicians on projects throughout the United States and overseas. Main responsibilities include oversight of veterinary team and records, veterinary supply and equipment maintenance, conducting surgical sterilizations in the field or in non-traditional surgical settings, and chemical immobilizations of ungulates utilizing remote drug delivery systems. In addition to participating in non-lethal projects, the successful candidate would also be involved in lethal projects. The majority of projects will be located within the United States, with a smaller number of international projects occurring each year. Frequent night work and a variable schedule depending on weather and seasonal conditions is the norm.

This is a full-time position with full benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Application Procedures

Interested candidates should submit a current resume and a 1-page cover letter highlighting qualifications, experience, and lifestyle compatibility with long field seasons that require extensive and extended travel. Provide the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of at least three (3) professional references. Please direct inquiries or application packages to Dr. Jason Boulanger via AVMA.

The position will remain open until filled.

White Buffalo Inc  is an equal opportunity employer.

Required Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • License to practice Veterinary Medicine in the United States and the ability to attain additional State licenses if needed
  • Ability to perform ungulate vasectomies and ovariectomies in the field or in non-traditional surgical settings
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain controlled drugs and capture equipment
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude at all times while working with WBI staff and members of other organizations who may have varying missions, opinions, and personalities
  • Ability to professionally interact with the public
  • Applicant must be physically fit, maintaining an ability to perform efficiently under physically demanding conditions, including walking variable terrain while carrying a backpack, dragging or transporting deer using stretchers, as well as safely climbing trees and working from tree stands
  • Ability to live harmoniously in small groups and in remote field camps
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity, approachability, and willingness to listen to internal and external constituents and learn from their best ideas
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, ability to solve problems with limited supervision, pay extreme attention to details, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Willingness and ability to spend significant time in the field away from home (field deployments can run from 1 week to 6 weeks or longer)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with wildlife capture/immobilization
  • Experience hunting and/or safely using firearms
  • Strong mechanical and technical troubleshooting abilities
  • Experience safely operating 4WD trucks, ATVs, and other outdoor vehicles
  • Experience safely operating various hand and power tools
