Welcome to the CEH family!  All of our doctors love to teach (and continue to learn from) the students that extern with us and we strive to provide a wide variety of experiences to promote individual growth while emphasizing our strong culture of teamwork. Our staff is also committed to this family mentality, and we hope that as an extern visiting with us you will feel included in the team’s goals as you learn, work and enjoy the exciting life of equine practice alongside us.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • EXPERIENCED TEAM:  Led by our founders, Mark Wallace (DAVCIM), James Talbot, Andrea Boyer and Rebecca Stinson, our team of senior veterinarians also includes Julia Shanahan and Nicolas Lavie.  Our ambulatory sister practice, Sullivan Equine, is operated by Candice Thrift and Melissa Sheppard and welcomes our externs to ride with them as well.  With different areas of interest and specialties, as well as different styles of practice, students are exposed to a rich variety of experiences.
  • DIVERSE CASELOAD:  Sports Medicine (wide range of disciplines), Internal Medicine, Reproduction, Neonatology, Alternative Medicine, Surgery, Preventative Care, Dentistry, Emergency
  • ACTIVE PARTICIPATION & HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE. Students are routinely invited to participate and practice clinical skills such as:
    • Endoscopy / Gastroscopy
    • Lameness Locator
    • Colic Exams
    • Surgeries and Wound repair
    • X-ray and Ultrasound
  • FREE LODGING
    • Private room in hospital hosts 2 externs in shared space
    • Kitchen/laundry/bathroom
  • MENTORSHIP:
As externs, students are encouraged to take an active role in the examinations, treatment planning and procedures (as the cases allow). We want you to be involved in every step of the process, to think like a doctor and imagine the patients were your own. We invite you to ask questions, come up with differential diagnoses and make suggestions during down time or one-on-one “truck time.” You will have access to daily schedules and patient files that will allow you look up case history, prepare and plan for the day ahead. We will often ask you to write up the case notes on patients we see together, listen in on conversations with clients or enter invoices together while on the road. In going over these topics together, you learn how we integrate the important aspects of communication, documentation, client management and financial decision-making in the role of DVM.
  • HOURS:
When staying in-hospital, there will often be extra opportunities to assist with after-hours work or emergencies and we understand that you might want to soak up every bit of practical experience we can offer you during this short stay. On the other hand, we know you need to rest and especially when we are very busy, we make every effort to make sure no-one (doctors, staff or students) are feeling overworked or overwhelmed. Neither our externs nor our interns are expected to be on call more than 50% of the time.

Preference is given to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, but all years are welcome to visit.

Please submit a current resume or CV along with requested dates.

About Carolina Equine Hospital
At Carolina Equine Hospital, we are dedicated to providing innovative comprehensive veterinary care, exceptional service and education through our team of experienced professionals. The practice was founded in 2009, with the merger of our founders' individual practices and currently provides general and secondary level care to large animal owners of the Piedmont Triad area. Our caseload encompasses a wide variety of english sport and western disciplines as well as pleasure horses. We see approximately 30% sports medicine, 20% reproductive, 30% preventative medicine and dentistry and 20 % internal medicine/ophtho/neonatal. The practice sees routine appointments during the week and only emergencies during the weekend. A significant lameness caseload is seen throughout the year. Spring is the busiest season with new foals and reproductive work (AI, shipped semen, ET). Services offered include: Dentistry: including advanced extractions, digital X-rays (intra-oral and standard views) and routine dental care. Sports Medicine: digital radiography, ultrasound, shockwave, lameness locator, and prostride. Emergency care: ambulatory and secondary level hospitalization. Equin...e reproductive services: artificial insemination, collection and semen processing, epididymal semen collection, embryo transfer, and assisted foaling. Internal medicine: resident Internal Medicine Diplomate on staff (advanced cardiology, neurology and oncology), gastroscopy, upper airway endoscopy, full laboratory equipment, SAA analyzer, and ECG equipment. Surgery: full surgical suite available, currently performing mostly musculoskeletal and reproductive surgeries. Alternative medicine: acupuncture, chiropractic and herbal medicine. Ophthalmology: including slit lamp ophthalmascope and tonometry. All doctors and staff in our practice have a strong commitment to the education and mentoring of students, externs and interns. We will provide students with a wide variety of equine experiences in a progressive and positive private practice setting where we emphasize a strong culture of teamwork, individual growth and organizational wellness.
