The Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic is offering a 1-year equine and farm animal internship. The goal of this internship is to aid in launching a new veterinarian on their successful career path by providing outstanding mentorship, a supportive environment, and a competitive salary. There will be 7 veterinarians committed to the success of the intern by offering their views and experience in the field. Our practice believes in family, setting boundaries, and work-life balance.

The Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic is a busy, twelve doctor mixed animal practice employing 7 large animal veterinarians and 5 companion animal veterinarians. The clinic is located in southeast Wisconsin in an area well known as Chicago’s playground, with convenient access to Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison. Although housing is not provided, rental opportunities are plentiful in the area.

The internship program will provide structured mentorship in all aspects of equine ambulatory practice including preventive care, dentistry, lameness, internal medicine, reproduction, and 24-hour emergency ambulatory care. Additional mentorship will include commercial and pet farm animal ambulatory medicine represented by bovine (principally dairy), small ruminants, camelids, potbellied pigs, as well as some exotics. Currently the case load is approximately 75% equine, 20% farm animal, and under 5% exotic and pot-bellied pig.

The Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic is a full-service facility housing an in-house laboratory, in-hospital large animal treatment room, surgical padded stall with hydraulic table and adjoining stalls for  day appointments and routine surgeries. The practice provides both in-house and mobile imaging with Next Equine Digital and VetRay radiography machines, 2 Logiq E ultrasound units, Classic Medical 480 ultrasound for reproductive exams, Butterfly ultrasound unit and portable bovine ultrasound unit. The clinic also has video endoscopy with a 1.5 meter and 3 meter scope. We have shockwave, therapeutic laser, and an array of conventional and regenerative medicine modalities including ProStride, Renovo and A2M. Ambulatory veterinarians also have access to stall-side SAA and lactate meters.

We are offering a competitive salary of $65,000/year with medical benefits (including health, dental and vision), 401(k), 5 days paid vacation, paid holidays, CE allowance, liability coverage, license fees, and employee assistance program. The candidate must have or be able to obtain a Wisconsin and Illinois veterinary license and a valid driver’s license. A USDA accreditation is encouraged. Although the intern is not under an annual contract with the Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic there will be a 25 mile radius one year Do Not Compete contract.

Requirements for application:

  • Veterinary school official transcript
  • Personal statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Three to four letters of recommendation
  • Personal interview (in-person visit encouraged but not required)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Externship at the Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic is highly recommended

The internship will be structured as follows:

  • Intern will work 4 days per Monday - Friday week and every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) on emergency call.
  • Daily work hours are generally 8 am to 5 pm.

  • Depending on progress (competence and confidence) intern will cover after hours duty independently, with pre and post check-ins with all appointments. The attending veterinarian will always be available during on call both in-person and via telephone.
  • Intern will have primary case care responsibilities for first-opinion and emergency/critical care cases.
  • Intern will be the primary surgeon on a range of elective and entry-level procedures.
