DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz is a premier AAU research university with strengths in both laboratory and field research. The campus veterinarian is a campus-wide position that sits within the Office of Research and is supervised by the Vice Chancellor for Research. The campus veterinarian primarily supports faculty in the division of Physical & Biological Sciences, the Baskin School of Engineering and the Institute for Marine Sciences. The veterinarian oversees animal care in the laboratory setting, within the campus vivarium, at the Long Marine Lab and in the field work setting.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The campus veterinarian applies advanced professional veterinarian concepts to perform highly difficult general medical or surgical work. They provide consultation on problems or difficult cases. They mentor and oversee work of assigned personnel. This position may serve as chair of major committees such as quality improvement, peer review, etc. The campus veterinarian ensures activities adhere to animal use protocols; provides assessment to Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The position ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The campus veterinarian provides training related to the use of animals and the development of animal research protocols and reviews all animal protocols. Provides consultation or clinical case management, reviews clinical records and determines if appropriate treatment is being given.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

60% - Animal Research Consultation

  • Communicates with researchers and the community regarding the use of laboratory animals in research projects and the treatment of animals during fieldwork. Consults on and reviews IACUC proposals. Provides consultation or clinical case management as needed. Consults on more difficult cases to review clinical records and determine if appropriate treatment is being given.


25% - Animal Care Operations

  • Competent in maintaining animal health records, including both manual and computerized health data. Oversees operational animal care functions. Performs audits of completed clinical work. Oversees animals and monitors animal health on experimental protocols in laboratories and field settings.


5% - Examinations & Reports

  • Has advanced understanding to be able to perform complex examinations, complete analyses, order X-rays, discuss special diets, and write prescriptions. Reviews reports and has the skill to interpret advanced results. Completes recharge forms for veterinary services.


5% - Conference & Instruction

  • May present at educational conferences or informal case management conferences on area of specialization. Provides instruction essential to the successful management of a veterinary practice for DVM veterinary students. Oversees the rotation of students through practice groups.


5% - Communications

  • Demonstrates advanced communication skills addressing sensitive issues with animals, clinical team members and staff.


 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree (D.V.M. / V.M.D.) from veterinary school that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Associate, or equivalent degree.
  • Requires knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of advanced Veterinarian duties.
  • Advanced clinical skills.
  • Demonstrate broad knowledge of traditional laboratory animal species and willingness to work with non-traditional species.
  • Must have advanced diagnostic and decision making skills in more difficult cases with the ability to interpret results. Must be able to diagnose animal conditions and make associated treatment recommendations.
  • Ability to perform manual and electronic animal medical record keeping.
  • Must be able to communicate with owners / handlers, researchers and clinical staff members regarding a variety of complex clinical and care issues. Demonstrates interpersonal and oral communication skills to interact with all clients, students and staff.
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative manner.
  • Must be able to influence and interact well with others.
  • Experience to teach animal handling and husbandry skills to students and animal care technicians.
  • Requires knowledge of electronic / medical records systems. Must be computer literate.
  • Knowledge and ability to manage and/or oversee biosafety level 2 research and animal facilities.


 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • For Research Facilities: ACLAM diplomate (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine).
  • Knowledge and/or experience with field research.
  • Knowledge and ability to manage and/or oversee breeding and management of genetically engineered rodents.
  • USDA National Veterinary Accreditation.


 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic school.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work on-call.
  • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
  • Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
