This is a tenure-track position (twelve-month appointment) comprising 80% Extension and 20% applied research. The position is in the Center for Food Animal Health (CFAH), Department of Animal Sciences within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.

Responsibilities:

The Swine Health Extension Specialist will be expected to have expertise in swine health and disease diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and swine production practices (preferably at a commercial level). The focus is on identification of optimal health practices that address major challenges of the swine industry and maintain profitability. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with swine industry veterinarians, extension educators in the state, and research colleagues. They will be expected to develop an Extension Program focused on swine health and production related projects current with the industry’s needs and concerns, support on-farm herd health programs, and contribute to existing OSU extension efforts through technical workshops that benefit the Ohio swine industry. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other faculty to seek funding to support and maintain an applied research program in swine health and disease. All faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas of the Land Grant Institution (Research, Teaching and Extension). Teaching expectations include the training and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.

The Department of Animal Sciences. Housed within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, the Department provides undergraduate and graduate students formal and informal learning opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, to guide students in achieving their goals and become the next generation of industry and academic leaders. Undergraduate students can choose from 7 Animal Sciences minors and majors degree specializations (including specializations in Animal Biosciences, Animal Industries, and Veterinary Technology). The Department offers a robust graduate program that awards MS and PhD degrees. There are currently 40 graduate students and 530 undergraduates enrolled in departmental majors. Research, Extension and education programs in the Department aim to increase the economic profitability of agricultural animals and the quality of their products, improve animal welfare and food animal health, lessen the environmental impact of production animal systems, and foster human-animal relationships. The Department utilizes/oversees multiple animal facilities comprising of beef, equine, dairy, small ruminants (sheep and goats), swine, and poultry.

The Department employs 40 faculty and 85 staff members working at the CFAES Columbus and Wooster campuses, and research centers including the Center for Food Animal Health on the CFAES Wooster campus. The center is recognized as a global leader in using One Health approaches to solve critical and emerging problems associated with production limiting diseases of food animals and pathogens transmissible between animals and people (zoonoses) and food safety. The center has a modern office/laboratory building and animal facilities including a state-of-the-art BSL-3-Ag facility. The animal facilities also include a laboratory for the procurement and maintenance of germ-free animals. CFAES Wooster campus maintains herds and flocks of major food-producing animals for experimental studies. Excellent opportunities are available for collaboration with food, veterinary, medical, animal and plant scientists on the Wooster and Columbus campuses. This position is based on the CFAES Wooster Campus (https://wooster.osu.edu/home). Qualifications:

A DVM or equivalent is required and a Master’s and/or Ph.D. in Animal Sciences or a related field is preferred. Specialty board certification is desired. Experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams, and experience in working with and mentoring members of underrepresented groups is preferred. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills with a desire to commit to outreach education.
