PAWS is hiring! Full time and part time veterinary positions available!

At PAWS, we work every day to end pet homelessness and to provide top-quality care to animals with medical and surgical needs who would otherwise not have a chance. We are looking for diversely talented, team-oriented, full-time or part-time veterinarians who are ready to be part of a historic change in ending Philadelphia’s pet homelessness by performing high quality, high volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN), seeing community animals in our busy wellness clinics, and supporting our shelter and foster animals.

We think you’ll be a great fit if you:

  • Want to work with pet owners and also play an integral role in caring for the 3,000 or more homeless animals that PAWS rescues yearly.
  • Are team-oriented and want to work with PAWS’ medical and non-medical staff to provide optimal care for homeless animals while being conscious about cost and outcomes
  • Can work fast and efficiently without compromising care.
  • Enjoy working with pet owners to find affordable solutions to keep their animals healthy.
  • Like teaching and guiding technicians, veterinary students, and support staff.
  • Want to help low-income families and their pets by providing quality, affordable, practical, appropriate care.

The Surgical Experience at PAWS:

PAWS’ Spay/Neuter Clinics provide sterilization services for animals owned by members of the community, feral or stray cats through “trap-neuter-release” programs, PAWS animals in foster care, and in-house shelter animals. Additional soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries are performed as needed for foster or in-house shelter animals. PAWS’ rock star team of surgical technicians make surgery days flow smoothly and efficiently.

The Wellness Clinic Experience at PAWS:

PAWS’ Wellness Clinics provide a means for low income families and animal rescue organizations in Philadelphia to access high-quality basic veterinary services for their dogs and cats. Clinics are equipped with the medications and resources to handle routine outpatient cases including wellness exams, skin conditions, upper respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disease, non-emergent urinary tract conditions, minor soft-tissue injuries, and other preventative care. Thanks to grants and other creative partnerships, PAWS is able to assist pet owners who experience financial barriers to getting their pet seen or medications filled.

The Shelter and Foster Animal Care Experience at PAWS:

PAWS has roughly 50-100 animals housed in our medical facilities at any given time, as well as a robust foster care program that places over 1,000 animals into foster care yearly. PAWS veterinarians assigned to surgery and the wellness clinic work as a team to provide daily care for this population through established walk-in hours for foster animals, routine and sick exams for in-house animals, and surgical care as needed. PAWS veterinary staff have access to in-house digital radiography, dental radiography, ultrasound, and other diagnostic tools which allow us to provide a high level of care to homeless pets in need. PAWS’s incredible shelter medicine, foster, and adoption programs result in a “save rate” / ”live release rate” of over 97%.

Benefits of PAWS employment:

  • 9am - 5pm schedule, with no on-call duties.
  • Health, dental, and prescription insurance for FT employees, as well as access to additional voluntary benefits.
  • Major holidays off (the shelter is closed) and PTO.
  • Yearly CE allowance, and up to four days off for conferences/CE (does not count against PTO).
  • Pennsylvania bi-annual license/license renewal fees.
  • Free and heavily discounted clinic services, lab work and medications for your personal pets.
  • Moving stipend considered for outstanding out-of-state applicants.
  • Competitive salary in-line with other shelters in the area

Educational and Licensure Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an accredited university with no history of complaints or disciplinary action required.
  • Experience in shelter setting and performing quality high-volume spay/neuter surgery strongly preferred.

Additional Job Skills Required:

  • A self-starter who is well organized, innovative, flexible, and passionate about PAWS’ goals and objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • The ideal candidate is personable, outgoing, patient, professional, empathetic, mature, and able to get along well with a culturally diverse community.
  • Strong sense of initiative and ability to problem-solve, identifying tasks that need to be accomplished and prioritizing appropriately, and working independently with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Comfort and experience with Google and Microsoft applications strongly preferred. PAWS uses a variety of web-based software that veterinarians must be comfortable learning to use on a daily basis for managing client care.

About Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)
PAWS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving Philadelphia’s homeless and at-risk pets. PAWS is the city’s largest rescue partner and provider of affordable, basic veterinary care for pet owners and rescue organizations that cannot otherwise access it. Through its three no-kill shelters, foster care network, and special events, PAWS finds loving homes for thousands of animals each year. PAWS is working to make Philadelphia a no-kill city where every savable pet is guaranteed a home. PAWS operates two low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter and wellness clinics serving pet owners and rescues in an effort to keep pets healthy and reduce the homeless pet population. The two clinics serve approximately 37,000 pets each year. The clinics serves pet owners who have difficulty affording or do not have access to basic veterinary care (sterilization, vaccinations, treatments for upper respiratory infections/parasites/fleas, etc.) and rescue organizations that need affordable spay/neuter surgery and basic veterinary care to carry out their lifesaving work.
