Pacific NW Pet ER & Specialty Center is in Vancouver, Washington, just outside of Portland, OR! Surrounded by beautiful nature and exciting recreation in every direction, Vancouver has a great small-town feel with access to big-city amenities just across the river.

Summary of Job Purpose and Function:

The Internal Medicine veterinary technicians ensure that the patients of the internal medicine service receive the appropriate care they require, as well as assist the doctors with their daily cases and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities

Communication:

· Assisting with appointment admission, history collection, and discharges

· Providing patient updates

· Reporting doctor recommendations

· Communicating respectfully with referring veterinarians

· Calling in prescriptions

· Providing follow-up care for patients and clients

· Following established hospital policies and procedures when handling client communications and concerns

Treatment of patients:

· Monitoring, collection of vitals, and nursing care

· Utilizing gentle patient handling techniques and asking for sedation when needed.

· Filling and administering medications

· Collecting and running charted diagnostics

· Assisting, cleaning, and educating owners on the use of feeding tubes

· Assisting and educating owners on the use of aerosol chambers

· Placing and removing continuous interstitial glucose monitors and educating clients on their use

· Communicating with doctors and technicians regarding patient status or concerns

· Accurate charting and completion of records and treatments in a reasonable timeframe

Anesthesia:

· Employing knowledge of anesthetic and monitoring equipment (anesthesia machine, capnography, pulse oximeter, doppler)

· Utilizing common anesthetic, analgesic, and sedative medications, and dose ranges

· Ensuring appropriate vascular access

· Applying knowledge of monitoring parameters

Imaging:

· Working with the basics of the ultrasound machines (turning on and off, entering patient info, printing images, etc.)

· Practicing appropriate radiation safety techniques

· Radiograph positioning and capture

· Assisting with fluoroscopic studies, CT, and MRI scans

· Submitting studies for evaluation and following up on results

Endoscopy:

· Ensuring appropriate use of flexible and rigid endoscopy and setting up of procedures (gastrointestinal endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, cystoscopy)

· Cleaning, maintenance, and sterilization of scopes

· Uploading images into patient’s chart

Sample collection:

· Setting up the appropriate supplies for samples needed.

· Ensuring appropriate submission of samples (including storage, shipping, and forms)

· Ensuring appropriate conditions are met for testing of endocrine, gastrointestinal, infectious, renal, and hepatobiliary disease processes (fasting, post time, last dose)

· Submitting tests and following up on results.

Disease familiarity:

· Including but not limited to acute and chronic renal disease, feline and canine liver disease, Leptospirosis, diabetes mellitus and ketoacidosis, pneumonia, immune-mediated cytopenia, protein-losing enteropathy.

Stocking and keeping rooms and wards clean

Clear understanding and enforcement of OSHA regulations and hospital safety standards.

All employees are required to participate in the on-call rotation as needed. Shifts are subject to revisions and changes at the discretion of the hospital.

Performs other job duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

· High School Diploma or equivalent required.

· Completion of an AVMA-Accredited Veterinary Technician Program preferred.

· Currently licensed in WA state, or able to transfer an out-of-state technician license.

· At least 2 years of veterinary experience required. Internal Medicine is preferred.

· Excellent communication skills. Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.

· Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations.

· Ability to act as a team player

· Punctually and with good attendance

· Multitasking skills

· Willing to work rotating holiday shifts in the emergency and critical care department.
