The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is seeking a high-energy, motivated, and customer service oriented individual to join our team as a clinical laboratory animal veterinarian and Assistant Director. Research programs at IUSM encompass a broad range of biomedical research activities, including cardiovascular disease models, alcoholism, hematopoietic cancer, behavioral research, and gene therapy. The LARC provides care and housing for multiple species of laboratory animals with a major emphasis on swine, dogs, rabbits, rodents, frogs, and zebrafish. Our AAALAC International accredited program consists of approximately 90 animal program staff, including eight veterinarians. 
 
Faculty appointment ranking will be as an Assistant Scientist. Scientist track faculty are responsible for the research mission of the IU School of Medicine. All job duties as outlined herein are required to support the research mission. This is a non-tenure research track faculty position. 
 
Overall duties will include but are not limited to: provision of clinical care, colony health surveillance and diagnostic services, investigator consultation and support, personnel training, and IACUC participation. Investigator assistance includes advisement on the conduct of technical services, breeding colony management, study design, and general administrative procedures. 
 
Veterinary Duties (~70%): 
• Provide preventative, clinical, diagnostic, and surgical services to research animals at IUSM and to any contract facilities affiliated with IUSM 
• Maintain animal care documents and other records in a manner ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations 
• Participate in animal health surveillance programs and assist with imports and exports. 
• Consult with investigators and staff to provide instruction and assistance in the housing, care and treatment of animals. 
• Assist investigators in providing surgery and aftercare. 
• Participate in training programs for animal husbandry and research personnel. 
• Assist the Attending Veterinarian by establishing and implementing effective quality control systems for animal husbandry practices; revise techniques and procedures as required to obtain optimal standards; assist in SOP and policy development. 
• Provide clinical and didactic instruction to veterinary residents, interns, and veterinary students on the care of laboratory animals. 
• Provide expertise and assistance for specialty areas such as in immune-compromised, gnotobiotic, agricultural, or ABSL-3 restricted areas, as needed. 
• Work closely with a facility supervisor partner as a team to solve complex challenges impacting the unit. 
• Perform direct and indirect supervision of staff (lateral leadership), including human-resource related responsibilities such as time-management, scheduling, goal-setting, mentoring, career development, and performance management. 
• Share after-hours and holiday emergency on-call services with other veterinary staff on a rotating basis. 
• Perform other duties as assigned by Associate Director or Director. 
 
Regulatory Duties (~30%): 
• Assist the IUSM Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Attending Veterinarian in maintaining compliance with all applicable federal and state animal care and use regulations as well as IUSM university policies. 
• Assist in maintenance of AAALAC International accreditation. Support various IACUC activities including but not limited to veterinary review of protocols, facility inspections, lab inspections, program review, and post-approval monitoring. 
• Provide consultation and mentorship to investigators regarding anesthesia, analgesia, breeding, and other study-related needs related to protocol development. 
• Serve on other campus regulatory committees as assigned.

• Doctorate or Terminal degree is required. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree is required. 
• Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
• Have a minimum of 2 year’s post-DVM clinical experience (in private practice, or in an institutional/academic setting). The ideal candidate will have prior relevant laboratory animal veterinary experience. Completion of an ACLAM-approved residency is preferred. The selected applicant will be required to work towards achieving ACLAM board-certification. 
• Ability to obtain an Indiana veterinary medical license, state and federal controlled substance registrations, USDA APHIS category II accreditation, and FBI Security Risk Assessment (SRA) within 6 months of employment and maintain in good-standing throughout employment.
