Small animal-Avian/Exotic externship

Care Animal Hospital of Libertyville (CAHL), is a 4-doctor small animal and avian/exotic practice that is located in north suburbs of Chicago. We are actively seeking 3rd and 4th year veterinary students interested in a small animal and/or avian/exotic externship. Our externship provides development opportunities by giving you hands on experience in a family-feel setting. During your externship, you will have the opportunity to work-up cases with our experienced doctors by examining patients, formulating diagnostic and treatment plans, participating in surgeries and doctors rounds and educating clients. 

 CAHL is a well-established hospital providing a broad range of services, equipped with state of art technology including digital radiography and ultrasound, Idexx in-house diagnostic equipment, paperless practice management software and emergency care capabilities. In addition to routine surgery, we also offer a wide range of soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, acupuncture and veterinary chiropractic (coming soon). Some advanced surgery exposure you will receive includes CBLO, FHO, MPL and all manner of abdominal exploratory and routine and complex cancer surgery. We also have an in-house, rotating, board-certified Internal Medicine specialist who routinely performs abdominal ultrasounds and echocardiograms as well as manages and treats our chemotherapy patients.

A big part of our hospital culture is providing high quality medical care to local rescue organizations. We performed 250 spays/neuters in 2019 on rescue dogs and cats alone to help control the number of homeless pets and unwanted litters. This is a great opportunity for 3rd and 4th year externs to gain extensive exposure to routine surgical procedures. We are proud to be an important member of the rescue community and would like to contribute more by teaching the future of veterinary medicine about the importance of rescue organizations.
