Clinical Assistant Professor or Clinical Lecturer in Shelter Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida is seeking applicants for a Clinical Assistant Professor or Clinical Lecturer in Shelter Medicine.

The successful candidate will lead a shelter-based clinical clerkship for third- and fourth-year veterinary students focused on surgical training in spay and neuter techniques. Other topics may include population management, preventive healthcare, behavior, welfare, treatment of common illnesses and injuries, and professional wellness.

The clinical clerkship is a partnership between the UF College of Veterinary Medicine and Miami-Dade Animal Services. MDAS is one of the largest animal shelters in the country with an annual intake of more than 30,000 animals, live outcomes exceeding 90%, and a broad range of community-based support programs and collaborations. A large veterinary care team works closely with staff to promote pet retention, return-to-home, and public health, while minimizing length-of-stay, promoting physical/behavioral wellness, and vigorously pursuing animal cruelty investigations. The primary responsibility for this position includes instruction of veterinary students in a high-quality shelter environment, with a particular emphasis on surgical training in spay-neuter.

The successful applicant will be an employee of the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, but will be based in Miami, Florida with occasional service in Gainesville. The position can be filled as a Clinical Lecturer (approximately 42 weeks of clinical instruction in the shelter) or as a Clinical Assistant Professor (approximately 36 weeks of clinical instruction with expectations for performing research, teaching, and service during off-clinic time). Clinical assignment is adjusted annually at the discretion of the Department Chair. The UF Shelter Medicine Program is supported by 5 other Gainesville-based faculty with a mission to train veterinary students in the problems of homeless animals and medical/surgical/behavioral care of individual animals and the shelter population as a whole, to provide advanced training of Shelter Medicine specialists, to deliver outreach field services to assist shelters, and to complete research to solve existing and emerging threats to successful sheltering programs.
