Clinical Assistant Professor- Small Animal Primary Care

Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time non tenure clinical-track position in Small Animal Primary Care/General Practice. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, high functioning team that focuses on providing the highest level of patient-centered care for small animal patients while teaching veterinary students on rotation in the Companion Animal Clinic. Responsibilities include seeing patients during appointments (well and illness visits) and performing common soft tissue procedures (OVH, neuter, mass removal, etc). The Small Animal Primary Care service also offers full-service small animal oral health evaluation and treatment. There are also opportunities for didactic teaching, as well as instruction in numerous clinical skills and student surgery laboratory components within the D.V.M. curriculum. Much of the curriculum is team-taught, and all faculty members are asked to participate. Small Animal Primary Care faculty members are also expected to serve as clinical mentors for small animal interns.

The following qualifications are required:

• DVM or equivalent degree
• Current AZ veterinary license, or the ability to obtain one within 2 months of start date
• At least three years of experience in Small Animal Primary Care/General Practice
• Evidence of excellent clinical and communication skills
• Strong interest and proficiency in small animal dentistry and common small animal soft tissue procedures
• Desire and motivation to provide high quality patient-centered care
• Strong commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of students
• Collaborative mindset and flexibility in order to foster a team-approach to teaching and service
• Belief and willingness to promote a positive work culture and mental well-being

The following qualifications are desirable but not required:

• Teaching experience
• Research experience
• Interest in exotic animal care
• Graduate degree in a relevant field of study
• Board certification in a relevant field
• Additional advanced training

The College of Veterinary Medicine is housed in Cactus Wren Hall and in the Animal Health Institute. Cactus Wren Hall is a new facility with ample classrooms, teaching laboratories, research laboratories, conference rooms, and offices. The Animal Health Institute is comprised of The Companion Animal Clinic, the Equine and Bovine Center, and the Diagnostic Pathology Center. The Companion Animal Clinic is a modern and innovative veterinary hospital for small animals. The 110,000 sq. ft. building contains state-of-the-art medical, surgical, dental, and intensive care facilities. Additional patient services include small animal internal medicine, small animal soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, medical oncology, neurology, physical therapy, cardiology, urgent/emergent care, and therapeutic plasma exchange. A full range of endoscopic equipment, CT and fluoroscopy are also available. The Companion Animal Clinic also offers clinical pathology and microbiology laboratories, as well as a full-service diagnostic lab. In addition to outstanding clinical facilities and equipment, the Companion Animal Clinic houses a pharmacy, a large and well-equipped surgery teaching laboratory, simulated examination rooms for clinical communications training using standardized clients/patients, and ample conference and small-group meeting rooms. Adjacent to the Companion Animal Clinic is the Equine and Bovine Center, which houses large animal teaching and treatment facilities, and small herds of cattle and horses. The Diagnostic Pathology Center offers a full range of anatomical pathology and forensic pathology services and contains ample teaching spaces.

We are seeking a faculty member who is enthusiastic about participating in the growth of a young veterinary college and contributing to shaping its teaching and clinical programs. Previous experience in an academic setting is not required, as our main focus is creating students that are Day-One ready veterinarians. While independent research is not a requirement for this position, scholarly activity is expected of all faculty members. Evidence of interest and experience in research will be considered an asset.
