Southern Hills Veterinary Services Inc. has a position available for a practicing veterinarian.  We have offices located in Corning, Creston, Red Oak, and Villisca, Iowa.  At this time, we are looking for a “mixed animal” veterinarian that will be doing approximately 60-70% small animal and 30-40% large animal (mostly cattle, but there is equine work that could be built into the position if desired). The position is flexible and would evolve to meet the person’s professional interest with mentoring opportunities readily available.  The current position is for a veterinarian based primarily out of our Red Oak office. We have a dedicated team that does an outstanding job.

Our current veterinarians include Dr. Scott Shuey (KSU 95), Dr. Krista Davies (ISU 1996), Dr. Greg Weis (ISU 2002), Dr. Aimee Anderson (ISU 2004), Dr. Melissa James (KSU 2005), Dr. Kate Fridolph (U of I 2012), Dr. Ryan Shuey (ISU 2016), and Dr. Josh Fioretto (ISU 2021).  SHVS has been serving southwest Iowa in an ever-evolving capacity for over 40 years. The Corning, Red Oak and Creston offices have both large and small animal facilities; the large animal facilities include hospital pens, a maternity/surgery pen, and hydraulic chutes.

Currently our gross revenue is split approximately 50/50 between large and small animal business.  In spite of the difficulties of being a rural practice, both our large and small animal sides have been continuously growing.  Many different opportunities are available in our small animal services – we range from routine appointment with vaccines, spays, and neuters up to more complicated internal medicine cases as well as soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.  The 3 larger offices have in house lab capabilities (blood machines, radiographs) and we have 2 large animal ultrasounds that move between the offices.  Our producers in Southwest Iowa are primarily cow calf operations.  These range in size from 10 to 1400 head with a large number of the commercial cow herds in the 180-400 head range. Our large animal work is comprehensive, ranging from processing calves to feedlot consultation.  We have a growing number of horses that we do routine dental and reproductive work on as well.

Our area encompasses rolling hills with a large number of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting and camping.  Viking lake, Hacklebarney, and Lake Icaria are state parks located within a very short drive of Red Oak, with others (Waubonsie State Park, Lake of 3 Fires, etc) located not much further.  But, if you need some big city amenities from time to time, you don’t have far to travel either.  From Red Oak, the Omaha metro area is located within a 1-hour drive and the Des Moines metro area is only a 2-hour drive.

Thank-you for your time and consideration - we look forward to hearing from you.

NOTES:

Additional Salary Information: Other benefits include: Set amount paid toward medical insurance - a company health insurance is available; Simple IRA with matching available after 1 year; CE stipend; IVMA and AVMA dues paid PLUS dues to an additional professional organization of choice; 13 days PTO first year
