Morris Animal Refuge is looking for a Full-Time Veterinarian to join our Amazing Team!

Founded in 1874 Morris Animal Refuge is the Nation’s First Animal Refuge and first institution in the World to shelter Cats!  We take in all domestic animals from Dogs and Cats to Small Mammals, Reptiles and even Birds with the goal of finding all of them forever homes.  Steeped in history and a pioneer in Animal Welfare, today Morris Animal Refuge is a successful lifesaving organization with a 96% Save Rate.  Morris has all of the features of a large Animal Shelter but in a smaller more intimate environment where employees develop meaningful professional relationships and pursue a common goal of lifesaving for all of the animals that come to our shelter.

Over the past two years, we have dramatically increased our medical care resources - with the building of a brand new state of the art surgical suite and three life-saving isolation rooms.  Because of this dramatic increase in our medical capacity we are in need, for the first time ever, a full -time veterinarian to run our medical department offering amazing care to our ever growing animal welfare community.

We offer a competitive salary, continuing education, wonderful benefits, a fun working environment and amazing support from our Executive Director and fellow Senior Team members.  We may be small, but we are mighty - Our lifesaving mission along with our drive for continuous improvement and growth creates a wonderful environment for a full-time Veterinarian looking to pursue a successful and meaningful career in shelter medicine.  If you are excited and interested in this opportunity -  we would love to hear from you.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge of contemporary shelter medical protocols including vaccination on intake, risk assessment and infectious disease principles. Familiarity with symptoms of diseases common to dogs and cats. Knowledge of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic veterinary treatment of companion animals.

The shelter veterinarian is not soley responsible for euthanasia decisions that relate to shelter capacity such as space, however they should regularly advise the shelter management team of animals that are at risk of suffering or in need of care that is not easily provided in the shelter setting.

About Morris Animal Refuge
Founded in 1874, the Morris Animal Refuge (MAR) is America’s First Animal Shelter. We are committed to adoption, education and high-quality care, and as an open admission shelter, we have never turned an animal away. As the only privately funded (non-animal control) open admission shelter in Philadelphia (and one of the few remaining in the country), MAR provides care for a wide range of animals, from those ready for placement in a new home to those exhibiting severe behavioral, medical, or aggression issues that aren’t able to immediately be placed. While we are dedicated to our mission of never turning an animal away, we are also committed to reducing unnecessary euthanasia and ensuring that every animal that enters our care is given a chance at a loving home. Our hard work has paid off - and today we are happy to report that we have a 97% Save Rate! As an open admission shelter, the Morris Animal Refuge admits all animals, regardless of age, health, behavior, breed, or species. We believe that always providing an animal a place to go is central to fulfilling our role in animal welfare, in Philadelphia and nationally. We believe that always providing owners with this option is central to supporting our community and ensuring no animal is left without care.
