Battelle is seeking a Veterinarian Surgeon to perform surgical and non-surgical procedures, veterinary care, and physiologic evaluations associated with sponsored preclinical study execution and research and development objectives. Position is located in West Jefferson, OH.  We realize that our strength and competitive advantage lie with our people. The position requires clinical experience with laboratory animal species, proficiency in qualitative and quantitative clinical evaluations and competency with surgical techniques and the acquisition of new procedural skills.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities will include:

 

  • Conducting a variety of both invasive and noninvasive surgical procedures and documenting protocol specified surgical and non-surgical procedures and acquiring and applying new procedural and clinical surgical skills as required. Surgeries include but not limited to:
    • Vascular Access Port (VAPs) placements
    • Telemetry transmitter implantation
    • DSI and EMKA units; for temperature and activity, blood pressure, left ventricular pressure, respiratory impedance, electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram
    • Medical device implantation
    • Other surgeries as required by study.
  • Contributing to the surgical/procedural and post-procedural care components of IACUC protocols, amendments and renewals
  • Contributing to the maintenance of facility animal related SOPs and in-depth knowledge defined procedures and associated training
  • Contribute to the daily care and clinical oversight/support for research animals, disease diagnosis and experimentation in ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 research areas at Battelle
  • Contributing to the maintenance of facility good laboratory practices (GLPs) and AAALAC credentials and applies knowledge of pertinent regulations (GLP, USDA memoranda).
  • Engage with other veterinarians to maintaining and advancing the facility veterinary program and health and welfare of the facility colony, including proper study recruitment, preventative medicine, veterinary care, health record maintenance, husbandry, health surveillance, and use of in vivo models in biomedical research
  • Remaining informed of, and responsive to, regulatory changes
  • Use controlled substances with lab animals and be responsible for maintaining appropriate records,
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to the unique challenges of fast-paced research environments

THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED

  • DVM/VMD degree from AVMA-accredited institution with licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States.
  • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state
  • USDA accreditation or application submitted within 1 month of hire
  • Two or more years of clinical experience in an academic or industry setting in either USDA or FDA regulated environment preferred.
  • US persons as defined by US export control laws.
  • Laboratory experience working with in vivo models.
  • Surgical modeling experience preferred
  • ACLAM/ECLAM Board certified strongly preferred
  • Position requires the ability to work in extreme environments (hot, cold, noisy, humid, etc.) with a high priority focused on biosecurity, attention to detail, and timeliness. Individual must demonstrate persistence and energy in a dynamic, fast-paced, and demanding work environment. Must be willing to work directly with animals during ante-mortem and post-mortem procedures.
  • Willingness to learn at a rapid pace in results oriented, teamwork environment.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary matrix environment and value the importance of teamwork. Demonstrating sound judgment and analytical thinking. Will manage processes, projects, and function well in a team or committee role.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to the unique challenges of fast-paced research environments
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, sufficient for accurate transmission of information internally. Requires ability to interface and build working relationships with team members at all levels of site organization. Must be proficient in basic computing skills such as e-mail communication and word processing.
  • Requires ability to work weekends on a rotational on-call basis.
  • Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols
  • Must be willing to participate in a medical health surveillance program and be able to wear personal protective equipment as required
  • Physical is required, ability to wear/use appropriate PPE and equipment and also requires FDA approved immunizations.
  • This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations
  • Visual Demands – Must be able to read and see clearly. Prescription eye wear is allowed.
