I am Doug Thal DVM DABVP and our practice is Thal Equine LLC. I have been in practice 28 years and this practice is 23 years old. I am looking for inspired vets to help me further develop and improve our vet practice: provide even more exemplary client service, and help build and deliver the HSVG model (see below), which integrates perfectly with the rapid development of telemedicine.

Ever hear of Horse Side Vet Guide (HSVG)?   It is an encyclopedia of horse health I created for horse people. The HSVG app has been downloaded in nearly 90 countries and the website is one of the most highly regarded (and highly used) in the industry. Here is my explanation for vets: https://horsesidevetguide.com/for-vets  The way we practice is a reflection of the HSVG model. It is all about client education and communication.

Our practice is a well-equipped, 2-doctor, progressive referral practice with a full hospital and a small primary-care ambulatory practice. We have a great reputation in our region. (look up Thal Equine on Google and see our reviews). About 60% of our cases are referrals from vets from a region from southern Colorado to Southern NM.  We hope to expand that.

Much of what we see are the challenging and interesting cases- complex lameness, podiatry difficult sinus and dental cases, difficult medical cases, elective and colic surgery, and more. We have a modest ambulatory practice, limited to horse people who understand our approach and who want to be the very best equine caretakers they can be. The population of horses we see is a mix of English and Western performance, pleasure and backyard horses

Our emphasis is on excellent client service, complete diagnostic and treatment options, horsemanship, exemplary client communication, and life balance for our team members.

The practice itself is located on a scenic 50-acre equine facility. We have state of the art DR, digital ultrasound, endoscopy, and Equinosis Q Lameness locator among many other "toys",  a full surgical facility, and a very well-equipped mobile unit.

A position with Thal Equine will allow you to practice high-quality medicine/surgery in a progressive practice. You will have the opportunity for quality of life. You will live in a quieter (but growing),  very scenic part of the west- a desirable place to be- rich in culture and outdoor recreation. You will be working in a practice model that encourages you to experience that! There will also be opportunity for practice buy-in.

Ideal applicants will be experienced, confident clinicians, and quiet, competent horse handlers. They will be self-motivated practice builders. I would like to find an ACVS surgeon, but I am open to lots of possibilities and skill sets. I am also open to someone with less experience, but a hunger to learn, improve and take on more responsibility. I am also looking for an intern at this time.

The compensation package will be competitive- a base salary, percentage of production, and benefits. It will be commensurate with experience and fit to practice. We can customize your schedule to your needs and wants. It can be part-time or full time. We will provide housing on site or a stipend for housing nearby.

You can see more about our practice at www.thalequine.com  . Check out Horse Side Vet Guide at www.horsesidevetguide.com

Questions? Please e-mail me at drthal@thalequine.com

Ideally, I would hire an experienced, highly-skilled surgeon and practitioner who is looking to only work part-time (intensely)and spend the rest of their time doing other things.

But I will consider someone with less experience, but who has a hunger to learn, develop their skills, and wants to take on more challenging cases.

I also need to find an intern.

Preferred applicants will have these skills:

  • Surgery. I will prefer someone who is proficient at surgery, including arthroscopy, colic surgery (at least willing to learn) Ideally, you would be willing to take on a colic surgery or other surgical emergency, working with a trained staff. You might not have a surgical assistant, or might have an intern only.
  • Ideally, you could confidently take on almost any equine emergency, and at least route it to an appropriate provider. ( or be willing to learn to do this)
  • Excellent lameness and performance horse work, including confidence taking and interpreting radiographs, ultrasound, and specialized performance horse diagnostics and treatment.
  • Excellent interpersonal client and staff skills.
  • Highly effective and thoughtful horse handler.
  • ideally you help build relationships and be a rain-maker for the practice, during the periods of time that you do work. Your name and reputation alone needs to garner respect for and potentially bring business to the practice.

NOTES:
2 openings.

Additional Salary Information: Tailored to situation. This is an example of a typical part-time $350.00/day base plus 23% production beyond $1000.00 collected. 100% after hours emergency fees collected. $1000.00 bonus for each colic surgery performed when I am not around. AAEP reg fee, $1000 CE allowance. PLIT. Or monthly salary plus production for full time. Compensation here is highly specific to the situation but will be competitive regardless.
