The Shelter Veterinarian oversees the health and wellness of all animals located within the DCSPCA campus and in DCSPCA foster homes.
Essential Functions and Major Responsibilities:
Diagnose and treat medical conditions in shelter animals.
Create and implement treatment plans.
Perform spay/neuter surgery and other surgical procedures as needed.
Assist with internal and public relations consultation and education services as they pertain to veterinary medical issues.
As necessary, testify in court cruelty cases; write reports for such cases providing professional opinion and diagnoses.
Provide telephone consultation with staff during normal business hours.
Treating all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
Always maintain a friendly demeanor and provide excellent client service while assisting with adoptions, volunteers, fosters, or DCSPCA staff.
Promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.
Filling in for other areas and performing other tasks/functions as needed, including helping out at special events.
Graduation from an accredited veterinary medical school.
License to practice veterinary medicine in the state of New York.
Valid DEA license and willingness to supply license for ordering accounts including controlled substances.
At least two (2) years experience working as a veterinarian in a shelter setting.
Enthusiasm for shelter medicine and the ability to see value of shelter animals.
Comfort with performing behavior euthanasia as necessary.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, client, and time management skills.
Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction.
Maturity, excellent judgment, and professional appearance.
Ability to read, write, and understand English. Bilingualism a plus.
Ability to treat animals with respect and contribute to effective teamwork.
Foster and nurture relationships and public relations beneficial to the organization and our programs.
Comfort and ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those which exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies.

About Dutchess County SPCA
Dutchess County SPCA is the largest animal shelter in Dutchess County, NY. It operates a medical clinic for both public and shelter animals, and houses and cares for 1800-2000 animals per year. It is the county's agency for humane law enforcement and holds municipal contracts for animal control throughout the county. DCSPCA's new modern shelter building was constructed in 2015.
