Philosophy of Internship: This internship is designed to provide the intern with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and help the intern develop client communication skills. Primary emphasis will be in lameness diagnosis and treatment and management of performance horses. Upon completing this internship, the intern will have skills suitable for entry into a sports medicine or general practice setting. The intern is mentored throughout the year, with a gradual increase in responsibilities as skills and knowledge increase.
Internship Duties: The intern will primarily work with the lead sports medicine veterinarian in the practice, as a mentee and an assistant, and will also help to manage in-hospital cases. The intern will be responsible for after-hours treatments and communication with the attending clinician on hospitalized cases. Some travel and overnight work is required (i.e. HITS Thermal horse show or other horse shows.) After an initial training period, and when the intern has demonstrated proficient clinical and communication skills, some after-hours emergency duty may be scheduled. As the intern and we feel comfortable, the amount of independent practice will increase. We emphasize communication in our practice and will continue to support the intern as they manage cases on their own. CE is provided.
Facilities: Advanced Imaging Diagnostics (Nuclear Scintigraphy, MRI), Surgery Suite, and fully equipped ambulatory vehicles.
Direct Supervision: 9-12 months
Estimated Workload: Intern will be expected to do night check and any after-hours treatments on patients 6 nights a week. Patient load is variable (approximately from 0 to 7 per night.)

Prerequisite Application Process: By the start of internship: DVM or equivalent from an accredited veterinary school; successful pass of NAVLE and California State Veterinary board examination. For application: letter of intent; CV; 3 letters of recommendation. An externship at SDEG is HIGHLY recommended.
Additional Salary Information: Group health available to intern after the first 90 days of employment
