The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) sees 5000 animals yearly in need of homes. It performs a high number of spays/neuters for rescued and publically owned animals. The Veterinary Technician position at the ARL assists veterinarians with these and other surgical procedures. The Veterinary Technician assists in the medical treatment of sick or injured animals from the shelter. Daily duties may include preparing patients for sterile surgical procedures, inducing and maintaining patients under general anesthesia, placing I. V. catheters, performing diagnostic lab tests, following medical orders written by the veterinarian, data entry and communicating with the public. The veterinary technician must have the ability to interact professionally and patiently with all visitors with respect and a positive attitude. Two positions are available (FT/PT).
Transporting animals to the surgical suite; restraining animals; providing assistance to the Animal Shelter veterinarian as directed.
Drawing blood, placing I. V. catheters, administrating I. V. fluids and medications.
Preparing patients for surgery, assisting during procedures and monitoring during recovery.
Using and maintaining surgical equipment.
Monitoring supplies, placing orders, and verifying receipts.
Maintaining equipment by following operating instructions and troubleshooting breakdown.
Maintaining animal records by documenting surgical procedures, medical findings and treatments given.
Instructing pet owners on post-operative home care and medication useage.
Assisting the veterinarian with physical examinations, immunizations and administration of medications.
