When I opened The Cooke Veterinary Medical Center in 2002, I had a vision to create a truly unique veterinary hospital that focused the work flow on the patients and clients, not on the staff. Our hospital flows to assist patients and clients to have the experience where they are the 'center attraction'. They are not herded like cattle from front to room and back to front again. They are not hustled in and out to meet the appointment scheduler. No one is given the 'bums rush' to hurry them along, so that the doctor speeds to the next room to give another hasty exam and care plan. Illness and lameness exams are allotted 1 hour on the scheduler with follow up or recheck visits scheduled for 30 minutes. With longer appointment times, the doctor can focus on all the needs of the patient and client and work to 'heal' the patient. Wasn't that why we all went to vet school in the first place?
This vision included a veterinary utopia of sorts. I wondered "Why can't we have it all? Why can't we make a great living, really help animals, treat clients with dignity and respect AND have time to spend with our families"? Why must we kill ourselves with late night appointments, heart breaking cases, and 'work ourselves to death'??
Why not focus on the highest quality, compassionate, low-volume service oriented care where the client is part of the healing process? With open views into surgery and treatment and allowing the owner to be part of the solution of healing their pets, we have created the most unique 'niche' practices in Tidewater, at least, and maybe the country.
We often get second and third opinion clients who are willing to pay for quality and are very loyal and appreciative of our approach. Clients also come for alternative therapies. These cases are often the most rewarding cases we see. By incorporating all treatment options, we can often improve the quality and longevity of these 'terminal' patients than with Western medicine alone.
Our business grows mainly from word of mouth advertising. Our gross sales have continued to increase every year without gimmicks and marketing strategies other than treating each and every patient and client 'right'. It also grows from the 'true connection' our clients feel when they are here. Our whole staff cares. The whole staff has the 'it' factor. We all enjoy working together, from the oldest who is 79 to the youngest who is 19. This makes our jobs as doctors so much better.
What we are: Group of professionals with an excellent support staff: 2 doctors, 3 LVTs with 25+ years experience, well equipped (just like every other practice out there that keeps pace with technology). We are dedicated to fixing the problem right the first time and not treat the symptoms without addressing the underlying issue. We are all 'people' persons.
What we are not: Corporate, agenda pushers, selling plans, and pushing personal income growth only through offering products and services that pets and clients may not really truly need. We are not high volume veterinary factory that will burn you out. That is not why we went to vet school and we bet the same goes for you.
We offer a very nice employment package that involves: Paid Holidays if it falls on a work day, CE and paid time for CE, DEA, AVMA, Liability insurance, 2 weeks paid vacation/personal time after 1 year, and 3 weeks paid vacation after 4 years of service, 401K, and we cover half of health insurance

We seek a full time veterinarian who is a great people person. The ideal candidate should believe in our business strategy as mentioned above and is enthusiastic about maintaining our standards. We are looking for the right candidate who wants to grow both personally and professionally. This candidate must have interest in learning about alternative therapies at a minimum. We would also love to find someone that can teach us as well and we learn new things together as a team. We seek a person that strives to 'balance' life and home life (hobbies, family, travel, etc) is vital to 'balance' our work lives. We are better veterinarians when we can get away from the practice stresses, rest, recover, and calm ourselves. Schedule for the ideal candidate : Mondays OFF, Tuesdays and Fridays 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 8:00 am to 6:30 pm, Saturdays only 1 per month and that is 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
Additional Salary Information: Salary is based on experience, we offer a Pro-Sal base of pay because you should benefit from working hard and you should always be able to count on the income too.
